League of Legends 10th Anniversary Recap

Keep On Moving

It is an uncommon achievement for any video game to reach 10 years of being active, and with a huge community like League of Legends recently accomplished. It seems like it was “yesterday” when out of nowhere, this game had its announcement and became free to play all over the Internet. First of all, it was one of the first alternatives for the MOBA genre, besides the Mod DotA(Defense of the Ancients) and HoN (Heroes of Newerth.) Secondly, since it became Free for all the players, everyone got the chance to download the game and try it without repercussions.

Intro
Older than the Fortnite community

Furthermore, at first, it felt that League of Legends had a limited roster of colorful Champions, with fewer Roles to establish in every Random Match. Additionally, you only had three different Game Modes (Summoner’s Rift, Dominion, and Twisted Treeline) where each had their own rules and mechanics. Last but not least, you took more time to unlock different Champions without paying money, and the cosmetics were only in a “Premium” level.

Certainly, now through all of these years, we all have witnessed different changes that somehow made an impact in our gameplay. Most noteworthy, we have more than a hundred Champions to choose from, and countless Game Modes to expand our gaming experience.

10th Year Anniversary

What happened on that day?

When Pixels had some Limitations

Multiple posts from different Social Media sources indicated that something special was “cooking” on the day of the anniversary. Furthermore, diverse pictures from well-known parts of some Champions began to appear beside the “cooldown” of the main website. Above all, once the Cooldown reached its end, one stream became available to all the League of Legends community. Likewise to all those famous gaming reveals that suddenly come around (E3 for example), Riot had the chance to reveal different projects. In contrast to all those famous Gaming Companies (Like Ubisoft, for example), where they focus multiple teams to elaborate a bunch of Video Games with different universes and protagonists, Riot took a different approach.

This time around, these developers kept the same Champions and setting that we have been familiar with all these years, but in completely deviating settings. As a result, we’ll get the chance to play as Garen in multiple ways, besides the commonly known MOBA perspective.

On that peculiar stream, Riot shared to the World the next upcoming projects:

Announcements

Legends of Runeterra (Card Game)

“Set in the world of League of Legends, Legends of Runeterra is the strategy card game where skill, creativity, and cleverness determine your success. Choose your champions and combine cards from different regions—each with their own style and strategic advantage—then build the perfect deck to take down the rest.”

Riot takes their chances on this type of video game genre with Legends of Runeterra. First of all, you get the chance to play with those famous Champions in a totally new way. Therefore, you place multiple cards on the “battlefield” and make them destroy each other as they continuously focus on defending your Nexus. Most noteworthy, once you add one of the Champions in a deck, every other card revolves around them, creating some sort of cohesion in every group of Cards that you gather.

In the footage, we get to see a mixture between two recent Virtual Card games that already are available in the market. First of all, we got some elements from Dota’s Artifact, were every Champion also has other cards depicting their abilities and it only uses a “single” lane. Secondly, there are well-known gameplay mechanics from Heartstone with the “mana” resource that expands after each turn.

League of Legends Wild Rift (Mobile/Console Game)

“Welcome to the Wild Rift! Featuring the same skill-based 5v5 PVP gameplay you expect from League of Legends on PC, Wild Rift was built from the ground up for new platforms. Lock your choice from a huge cast of League champions, team up with friends, and outplay the opposition.

Experience the thrills of League’s competitive and strategic 5v5 gameplay, rebuilt specifically for mobile and console. Choose your champion, take to the Rift, and destroy the enemy Nexus in 15-20 minute matches.

Explore the Wild Rift, a new-yet-familiar 5v5 map based on Summoner’s Rift and streamlined for faster games. A responsive dual-stick control scheme, designed exclusively for new platforms, makes sure your skill-shots on mobile feel as crisp as they do on PC.”

Due to the complexity of different peripherals between PC (Keyboard and Mouse), versus the Console counterparts, there are some drastic changes that need to be made to play League of Legends. Therefore, Riot made some modifications to the flow of the regular game and reduced the learning curve of some Champions. As a result, players with different devices will get a little taste of what it feels to participate in a “Solo Queue,” and learn multiple strategies in this less-complicated version of the game.

Codename Project A (Tactical FPS)

This game is probably the only one that looks a lot different from the rest of the other Projects. Indeed, Riot took some examples from Overwatch and Counter-Strike, mix everything up, and create their take in this genre. First of all, within the footage, we got to see some lookalike military guns like Submachine Guns and Sniper Rifles. Furthermore, to give the game a little Overwatch feeling, every character had their own special abilities that can give you some tactical advantages within multiple encounters.

Because the information of this video game is still limited, there are lots of speculations about the possible gaming mechanics that can contain. Furthermore, we may get the chance to play as famous Champions that use guns as their primary source of pain as guests. For example, Jhin which uses a Rifle to hit his targets may come around with multiple abilities that increase his damage and expand the range of his shots.

Last but not least, since it aims for a possible near-future Earth, there’s always the chance to join the multiverse with Runeterra. Therefore we’ll get the chance to add different environments and a little more magical capabilities to all of the characters within the game. Above all, the team involved in this project already gave promises to support the video game for some years to come.

Codename Project F (Co-op)

Project F
Getting Some Loot

Since we got the least footage of this Project, there are a lot of things to consider about what is the main focus of this video game. Indeed, even though there’s no clear knowledge about its genre, due to some screenshots we may speculate that revolves between a Diablo-like Game with some MMO (Massive Multiplayer Online) elements. Therefore, we may get the chance to use different Champions fighting numerous groups of monsters from different key parts of Runeterra. Most noteworthy, there is a chance that you’ll discover different players along the way or even some of your friends.

Codename Project L (Fighting)

Gather some knowledge about different inputs to create combos and special abilities to fight against powerful opponents. Similarly to any other video game of the same genre, every second count in the middle of a breathtaking fight versus other players. Furthermore, since it practically takes the same assets from the original League of Legends, we may get to see stages that represent famous places from Runeterra. Indeed, since the current Champion’s roster almost reaches the 150 number, the development team has a lot of options for their project. Last but not least, we all hope that it contains the necessary amount of fun to keep us playing for a couple of years.

Arcane (Animated Series)

Besides all those video game Projects, Riot also has some involvement to implement a completely new animated series about the League of Legends lore. This time around, this series will focus on two of the well-known Champions from the gaming community. Therefore, we get to experience different important events in the life of Jinx and her sister Vi. Indeed, the current footage shows that everything looks promising and if everything goes well, we may get the chance to see different stories from the vast Champion’s roster. Who knows, maybe Annie gets the spotlight in the next season.

Additional Content for the Main Game

New Champion Senna

In the new Champion teaser, we get to see some footage of the next Champion that will join the roster sooner than later. Seems like this time we will get the first support marksman in League of Legends. Indeed, through the video, it is revealed to us that Lucian’s wife, Senna, got rescued from Thresh’s lantern and she is ready to rejoin the action. As a result, we may get the chance to expand the story between Lucian and Senna. Indeed, improving the lore between these two characters and everything that went between those main incidents.

Rise of the Elements (Custom Game)

In this custom gaming mode, different elemental drakes give modifications to teams and change the overall feeling of the game. Since every element has its own properties and modifications, everything can happen in a random match. As a result, gather a competent team and aim for the high-value targets that’ll surely increase your winning chances. Above all, like Odyssey or any other custom mode, they always you in detaching yourself for a little while from all those “Solo Queue” matches.

Ultra Rapid Fire (Custom Game)

URF
Explosions?

The chaotic game mode that everyone loves is finally back on the main servers. First of all, in this modification, everything turns a little more interesting with the different elements that surround URF. Therefore almost all of the abilities get a considerable less cooldown and take fewer resources. As a result, you get to spam all your ability’s combos multiple times in a single team fight. Furthermore, almost all of the main stats have a higher number, making your Champion practically double its performance.

Additionally, almost all of the items have more potential than their normal counterparts. Most noteworthy, the bonuses from Baron and the Drakes give you a lot more advantages to deal a lot more pain to the enemy team. Overall everything gives you the possibility to turn the tide and win in less than 15 minutes.

Additional Components

Besides all of these important announcements, we always have constant updates for the main game. As a result, we have the potential to get new quests, new cosmetic items, and improvements on the META. Furthermore, there are always improvements in the overlay and main parts of the game to keep everything stable and working properly. Above all, since updating the game is a never-ending task to the Riot development team, we’ll always get constant changes that aim to improve our experience in the game.

Conclusion

Through all of these years, Riot has always kept its promise to continue supporting the game and keep on adding more interesting content for the main servers. In response, the gaming community always seems to improve and give their support through all these years. Therefore, when new cosmetics appear over the in-game store, players usually add them to their collection without thinking twice about its worth.

conclusion
Breaking Records

Still, though, everything wasn’t always a bed of roses. Therefore, some of the decisions from the development team had some conflicts with some players. In return, some of the updates had a negative impact on the player base. Most noteworthy, social media tools like Forums or Reddit gave the chance to express the people’s concern about some mishaps in their favorite game. On the other hand, Riot always gathers the feedback and sometimes creates some quick changes to make everything enjoyable to all of the members of their gaming community.

We are not certain about the future of League of Legends. Seems like, if everything stays the same way, there’s a lot of potentials to enjoy the game even further. Who knows, maybe another 10 more years with multiple additions to the game. Therefore, we may get the chance to have more than 200 Champions, countless game modes, and further projects that expand the lore of Runeterra.
